1954 Universal Genève "Polarouter" (Ref. 20217-3) | Cal. 138SS Bumper Automatic

$4,550.00

This 1954 Universal Genève Polarouter is an exceptionally rare and historically important early production example, dating to the very beginning of the model’s lineage, before the name would evolve into the more widely recognized Polerouter. Produced for Scandinavian Airlines’ groundbreaking polar flights, this watch represents a pivotal moment in both horology and aviation history.

The stainless steel case (ref. 20217-3, third execution) measures approximately 34mm in diameter with a 40mm lug-to-lug span and 18mm lug width. It remains original and appears unpolished to lightly worn, preserving the sharp lines and proportions that define these early cases. Its restrained size and clean profile make it a classic example of mid-century tool-meets-dress design.

At its heart is the original Caliber 138SS bumper automatic movement, a transitional technology that predates the revolutionary micro-rotor systems Universal Genève would introduce shortly after. Fully functional and historically correct, this movement represents an important step in the evolution of automatic winding mechanisms.

The dial has been refinished at some point in its life, with slight misalignment and unevenness in the fonts. However, the original layout and design language remain intact, still reflecting the aesthetic vision of Gérald Genta, who would go on to become one of the most influential watch designers of the 20th century. The hands, crown, and crystal are confirmed to be original in style, maintaining the watch’s overall integrity and vintage character.

Produced in 1954, this piece belongs to the earliest generation of Polarouters, with an estimated total production of only around 2,000 examples. These early bumper models directly precede the 1955 introduction of the micro-rotor Polerouter, making them especially desirable among collectors for their rarity and transitional significance.

Created during the pioneering era of Scandinavian Airlines System polar route flights, the Polarouter was engineered to withstand the unique challenges of navigation near the Earth’s magnetic poles — where traditional instruments could falter. As such, it stands as one of the first watches purpose-built for commercial polar aviation.

A rare and compelling Universal Genève, this 1954 Polarouter captures a moment of innovation, exploration, and design evolution, making it far more than a watch, but a true piece of mid-century history.
