Germinal Voltaire | Swiss Mechanical | FHF/Standard 96-4 | 17 Jewels | Date | Applied Gold Numerals & Indices | Steel Case | Circa 1970s

$175.00

This handsome Germinal Voltaire is a wonderful example of the smaller Swiss brands that flourished during the golden age of mechanical watchmaking. Its warm silvered dial features beautiful applied gold-tone Arabic numerals and baton indices, complemented by matching gold-tone hands and a practical date window at 3 o’clock.

The clean steel case and plain bezel keep the focus on the dial, giving the watch a classic late-1960s/1970s Swiss dress-watch appearance.

Inside is a Swiss FHF/Standard 96-4, 17-jewel, hand-wound mechanical movement. Part of the FHF 96 family, the 96-4 added a date mechanism while retaining the reliable, straightforward architecture of the original movement. It features central seconds, a traditional balance and regulator, and 17 jewelled bearings to reduce friction and wear.

Germinal Voltaire is an example of the enormous network of smaller Swiss watch companies that used established Swiss movements to produce attractive and affordable watches. While the name isn't as famous as Omega or Longines, the watch represents a genuine piece of the Swiss mechanical-watch industry.

What makes this one particularly appealing is the combination of its applied gold furniture, date display, steel case, and proper Swiss mechanical movement. It has plenty of vintage character without relying on a famous name.

A stylish and honest vintage Swiss mechanical watch from the final decades of traditional watchmaking.
