A fantastic example of mid-century Zenith design, this AutoSport combines a wonderfully clean case shape with a beautifully aged dial that has developed a rich, natural patina over the decades.
The dial is the star here. The original silver-toned dial has developed a warm, even vintage patina, giving the watch tremendous character without losing the crispness of its original design. Applied black baton markers surround the dial, with the classic Zenith star logo and “Automatic” script beneath 12 o'clock. A framed date aperture at approximately 4:30 adds a practical complication while keeping the dial beautifully balanced.
The case is equally appealing. Made from stainless steel, it has a wonderfully sculpted mid-century profile with broad, angular lugs and a gently stepped bezel. It has excellent proportions on the wrist—large enough to feel contemporary without losing the elegant character of a vintage Zenith.
Inside is a Zenith-signed automatic movement with 17 jewels, marked “SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS – SWISS” and “UNADJUSTED.” The movement is equipped with Zenith's automatic winding system and features a date mechanism. The architecture and markings are consistent with Zenith's 1960s automatic movements.
The movement visible in the photographs appears to be from the Zenith 2532 family, an in-house automatic calibre family used during the early 1960s. The 2532PC variant is specifically an automatic, sweep-seconds movement with date.
The screw-down caseback is signed:
ZENITH
SWISS MADE
ACIER INOXYDABLE
The original Zenith case, crown, movement and dial all come together beautifully, making this a particularly charming example of the brand's less-heralded—but extremely well-made—automatic watches of the period.
This isn't a watch that has been artificially aged or given a “tropical” dial for effect. The patina is simply the result of decades of honest aging, and it gives the watch a wonderful personality.
The combination of the patinated dial, angular stainless-steel case, applied markers, date display and Zenith automatic movement makes this a very wearable vintage piece. It has enough presence to work beautifully as a modern everyday watch while retaining all of the charm that makes vintage Zeniths so appealing.
A great-sized, beautifully proportioned 1960s Zenith automatic with honest patina and serious vintage character.
